TOURISM WITH RESPONSIBILITY - CHENNAI April 22

IN the upper reaches of the Nilgiris, the Toda tribe clings to a way of life that would take one back many centuries. Though the march of time has had its impact, many aspects of the life of this tribe are evident in the few remaining Toda villages or munds.

The way of life of the Todas has been the subject of many studies and has attracted many scholars. In recent years, the pastoral lifestyle of this tribe has drawn visitors from overseas. But maintaining the balance between preserving their culture and growth has always been difficult.

A Chennai-based travel company, Bharat Travels, has been taking visitors in groups of 8 to 10 to visit the Toda villages. The people of the munds are poor and low-impact tourism has helped mitigate their problems to a small extent. These tourist arrivals are well spaced out to reduce the impact of these visits on Toda culture.

The visitors use the available facilities, stay in Toda homes, and have the simple meals prepared by the family, besides trekking around the hills with a trained Toda guide.

The intricately embroidered Toda shawl and other handicrafts are popular with the visitors and has given the economy of the munds a boost, according to Mr S. Mahesh, Executive Director, Bharat Travels Interserve.

Mr Mahesh said: "The form of tourism that we practice is sensitive, and involves a lot of learning. Both the visitor and the host share a desire to sustain the ecological balance of the destination.''

Bharat Travels, along with two overseas companies — Intrepid of Australia and Above the Clouds Trekking of the US — have restored a Toda temple in Thugikode mund as their contribution to this unique destination and lifestyle. The temple was inaugurated last week.
